Do I have to turn in my Girl Card?

{1}

Here’s some dirt: I used some of my extra laziness time off over the holidays to catch up on some blogs and other social media posts I’d missed during very busy prior weeks and I learned something about myself in the process:

Apparently, I’m not really a girl.

I’ve been told by friends before that I’m a “dude in a chick’s body” and described as a tomboy, and as I read the things my fellow biological females write about and delight in, I started making a list of topics women seem to enjoy that I really, really don’t.  I’m sharing the list below along with a very important question for you ladies:  Do I have to turn in my Girl Card?

  • Glitter.  Glitter is literally  my nightmare.  That stuff gets stuck to EVERYTHING and I’ll find bits of it in my hair or on my clothes months after my last interaction with it.  I’m probably OCD, but man I hate it.
  • “Reality” TV. I’m one of those people who squirms when I see someone public embarrass herself, so these shows are a constant squirm-fest for me.  Also, they in no way reflect any reality I’ve ever lived in.  Okay, I think Duck Dynasty is funny, but that’s the only one.
  • Shopping.  I used to enjoy this one, so maybe there’s a hint of girl in me after all.  Now, though?  I shop online maybe twice a year and buy in bulk.  Can’t stand browsing.
  •  Sweet Wine.  Can’t handle sweet wine unless it’s a nice port.  This, however, is obviously part of a bigger problem for me:  I also hate chocolate.
  • Botox.  Okay, this just blows my mind.  I saw at least a dozen mentions of hosting Botox parties among gals I know IN THEIR 20′S!  Don’t do it, ladies!  You’ve got a very confident decade on your horizon and you don’t need  that stuff!
  • Heels. I like TAR Heels, but the other kind remind me of hours and hours stalking legislative halls in my early 2000′s suit and pumps, the lasting legacy of which is a jacked up lower back and painful arches.  I’ll take flats, thank you.

I’m not judging people who like these things,

So, ladies who like all of these things, what’s the verdict?  Do I turn in my Girl Card?

Are there any quintessentially “girl” things you don’t like?

I’d like to dedicate this post to my awesome older brothers who beat the girl out of me by practicing professional wrestling moves on me as a kid.

I do like reality shows like Extra Virgin (Debi Mazar and her tattooed hipster Italian hubby roaming around Florence or Brooklyn, buying cheese and cooking some droolworthy bruschetta) and Selling New York (small urban space addict, I love to see how those <1K sq ft spaces are laid out).  I can't stand the Real Housewives or crap like that anymore.

No to botox, wear flats constantly and I don't know, is prossecco a sweet wine? I don't think so, I'd say it's on the drier side. I do love XFactor infused vodka though which is definitely marketed to girlies.

I used to spend a lot of time shopping but I think it was a misguided appreciation of design.  I was always more attracted to great architectural shapes in clothing and bags anyway, could care less how sexy I looked.   I go to work now most days looking like something the cat dragged in, from the rain, through the cat door.  I've thrown almost all my makeup away and don't do acrylic nails anymore (although I do still get pedis).  I get way more jazzed up great packaging design and some artsy crafty creation than say leather like leggings.  I had to stop following all the fashion bloggers on instagram because they started to annoy me.

I'm not a tomboy for sure but I wouldn't say I'm a quintessential girl either, at least not by these definitions.  Some of the so called girlier activities I've given up have less to do with my girlness and more to do with I don't live in a city and work in a big downtown office now.

As for you I never saw you as a dude. You look like a pretty girl to me who likes to cook.  Haven't seen you write anything particularly butch yet :-)

HAHA! Yeah, I think I'm probably not all the way to the butch end of the spectrum :).  I love that notion that shopping was a misguided appreciation of design - probably was for me too in a way.  I enjoy looking at beautiful things, but realized I don't need to actually own them to enjoy them.  Great realization for the 'ol wallet.  And, I'm going to categorize your preferred reality TV along with Duck Dynasty: acceptable :).

I'm with you, I don't really like any of these things except for sweet wine & chocolate.  You just don't have a sweet tooth.  Which makes you weird in a different way, but not an un-girl way.  You're a kick-ass girl, just not a girly-girl.  Girly-girl stuff seems like a waste of time to me.

Yeah the sweet-tooth thing is very weird.  Not sure how that happened :).  And being called a kick-ass girl by a kick-ass girl makes it legit!  I'll be wearing a nametag with that on it today :)

Cracking up at you! ;) Duck Dynasty is the only reality show I enjoy as well! "HE GONE!"

It's the only reality show that actually reflects reality.  Love it!!

Well, while I do not like girls, after a bad year with the other sex, I don't like boys too much right now. Should I turn in my girl card???? lol

Actually, I think the bad members of the opposite sex should turn in their man cards!

First, I'm not a lady..I'm your Dad. Second, you're about as GIRL as they come and I should know. Third, I seem to remember your brothers being on the receiving end a good bit of the time. Fourth, well, O.K., the chocolate thing is a serious problem.

If my Dad confirms it it must be true.  And I never, ever, ever voluntarily wrestled A or M. :)

I love this post! I can tell that I am an overly girly girl because I love all of the things on your list...never had Botox but not opposed to it. HAHA Too funny!

thepinkgrowl LOL! How did I end up so un-girl?  And don't you dare get botox - you are beautiful as is!
